How should you manage storms of indifference when you have a tough week?
In leadership, it seems as if controversy and indifference come in waves, much like a storm. We move from one issue to another, and it becomes difficult to maneuver what in truth and what perception is. Much of what we must deal with is beyond our control, and often, after an incident. One may argue that controversy comes from poor planning, or that it’s just part of the gig of leadership. This may be true of course, but sometimes we may become overwhelmed by constantly dealing with the ebb and flow of difficult moments.
Have you ever heard the saying, there is more to the story? Opinions or perspectives have three sides. Two opposing thoughts, and the truth. People just want to be heard, and we need to do a better job of understanding the other side of an issue. Failure to understand one another creates indifference and possibly argumentative behavior. The key to changing indifference and avoiding arguments is collaboration and finding common ground. Without a doubt, the hardest stance to take, because we are dealing with the feelings of others. Finding common ground takes a lot of conversations and possibly heated debates. In the process of avoiding arguments, everyone must give and take, while remaining flexible. The most important step every leader must keep in mind is to remain right within yourself. Staying true to your values, remaining calm, will help you stay on the right path, your path. When we are on the right path, we can deal with others better, be more compassionate, and happier in difficult times.
How do you see past difficult interactions or situations, to see the reality?
How do we take indifference and change it into collaboration?
How do you remain centered, true to your values and beliefs?
Dealing with difficulties involving our organization or the people within it is the biggest trap for leaders. These issues can cause frustration, which clouds our decision making, and the positive attitude we need to lead. If you are faced with difficult situations this week, I invite you to pause for a moment, and see reality. There are commonalities and ways to bypass difficulty. Have a great week, and please leave a comment below that will contribute to this conversation.
