The Leader’s Short Memory

How do you move beyond your mistakes?

Have you ever said or done anything that you later realize was a mistake? In leadership, none of us are perfect. I am sure we all have put our foot in our mouth at some point in our career, I know I have. The real problem at hand is when we beat ourselves up repeatedly after a mistake is made. Great leaders see and acknowledge their mistakes but then they pick themselves up and keep moving. We can gain lessons from the mistakes we make but we must forget the turmoil that we feel at the time of the mistakes. Having a short memory of those moments will allow us to create a better plan, and move beyond those mistakes.

No one can be perfect in every situation. It is impossible to do everything right in every situation. Moving beyond our mistakes takes forgiveness. It is exceedingly difficult to forgive ourselves, especially if we have made decisions that inadvertently hurt someone or cause undue stress to our people. Forgiveness of ourselves is easier said than done but it is the first necessary step to moving forward with our goals and initiatives. Instead of continuously seeing what we have done incorrectly, we must uncover the lessons gained from our situation. Mistakes are not failures; we must never forget that. These bumps in the road of life may even give us the opportunity to grow ourselves, increase our capabilities, and improve things for our organizations.

Do you forgive yourself quickly when you make a mistake?

What lessons have you gained from your most recent mistakes?

How has your situation or goals improved after your recent mistakes?

Mistakes are made but those mistakes create better leaders, who do impressive things for their organizations. Our mistakes also help our personal situations become better. Erase the negative feelings from your memory to keep yourself moving on your path to excellence. What lessons will you gain this week? Thanks for checking in with Leading Conversations.
