What goals are you hoping to achieve this week?
I never intended to become a leader, but a life event guided me in that direction. In the eyes of some, I may not be the best leader for them. In leadership, we may struggle to have an answer or direction necessary to achieve a goal. I struggle too, as all leaders do. I make up for those struggles with my perseverance and the trust I have in those I surround myself with. I understand the importance of building those trusting relationships. The new school year is upon us, and it made me contemplate things I hope to work on this year. First, continue to build trust in the organization I serve. Second, I hope to slow down this year, engage in conversation, and better communication. Lastly, get a better understanding of the issues my people are facing. What are you working towards this week?
Trust is a fragile thing and building it is also the most important task for leaders. Without trust, many organizations flounder because the leadership doesn’t trust the people to do their jobs and the people mistrust the leadership. True understanding and a little bit of Grace goes a long way in building a trusting environment. Too often we fail to engage in deep conversation with our people. We visit as we pass one another to accomplish a variety of work-related tasks. We communicate, when necessary, about work and not on how each of us is doing. Great leadership allows time to visit our people and get into their environment. We must experience and understand what our people are facing daily. We all hope to become the best leaders possible. To achieve that we must keep our eyes on the things we often take for granted; building trusting relationships, talking to your people, and visiting them often.
How are you demonstrating that you trust the people you lead?
How have you engaged in deep conversation with your people?
How will you understand the day to day battles your people experience?
To start my year, I have committed to tightening up my leadership. I will continue to work on trust, engage in face-to-face conversations with people, and understand the daily struggles they are facing. I trust that you have some things you are working on to offer a better existence for your people and the organization you serve. Have a great week and thanks for looking in on Leading Conversations.
