#3 Remaining Positive

Have you had one of those days when nothing goes right, or it all goes south quick? We then get caught up in our emotional response. We lose control of our responses at times and then the rest of the day feels overwhelming. Today, I like to discuss the difficulty we face when things do not go our way.

We all have experienced those tough days. Whether that is something we experience personally, with family, work related, or other aspects of our lives; we have all been there. Eventually the anxiety and stress get to us, and we must find a way to deal with that leftover yucky feeling. For many people they have outlets for those feelings such as exercise, meditation, or engaging in a hobby of some form. For me, music has always offered some form of a release. I am not talking about playing an instrument or singing, which no one wants to hear, and I am not that talented. I am talking about listening to music. I enjoy several genera of music that speaks to the mood I am in. Other useful methods for me is hanging with my wife and kids, reading something thought provoking, and listening to Podcasts of authors and speakers I enjoy.

The key here is finding the thinks that center you and brings your focus back to your own sense of happiness. Like my previous post, we must ask what brings us joy? We must also stop and reflect in those moments we are feeling as if things are out of control. For me, it is incredibly difficult to stop in that moment and gain clarity before we respond with raw emotion. This is very intentional, and very difficult to break the habit. At times, our biggest stressors is responding to other people’s behaviors or problems.

We all respond differently to our tough days and you must look for things to get yourself centered. Here are some options to consider when your positive attitude starts to fade on those tough days.

  • Physical activity like a brisk walk just to get away.
  • Close your office door and blast some great tunes.
  • Reach out to a trusted friend, and vent to get the yuck out.
  • Listen to some positive Podcast or YouTube videos.
  • Pause and reflect in those moments you feel overwhelmed.

What intentional acts are you using to stay in a positive mindset?
