How can we define the issues that plague our minds and hearts?
I spent some time on the road this week and to pass the time I listened to another book on my Audible app. I picked a book that I enjoyed before. I listened to Brendon Burchard’s, The Motivation Manifesto. In this book he speaks to 9 Declarations, but I want to focus on one. The third declaration, We shall Defeat Our Demons. It was a great reminder of something I feel is important. Once I got home, I found the actual book and started scanning the pages for this powerful message I heard while driving. Here is the crazy part, I underlined the same message when I read this book years ago. It was powerful back then too; I just forgot about it. This post will complement last week’s post, Stop Feeding the Monster. My hope is we will be able to further define how we get in our own ways and pollute our hearts and minds.
A brief overview of Mr. Burchard’s concept; he asks us to see our inner demon as defiance. He states defiance is a three-headed serpent with the names of doubt, delay, and division. Doubt can be beat with Faith, while delay is beaten by actions we take. Lastly, division is conquered by love. This book has such power that will give anyone the motivation necessary to be the best version of themselves. I chose to share one small piece of this magnificent manifesto, which I found to be the most valuable to me in this moment of my life. There are 9 Declarations that could impact anyone, therefore this book has much to teach us.
Combating doubt starts in your mind. Yes, we must have faith in our abilities, but we also must believe we can do what we are asking of ourselves. Whether you use positive talk, prayer, or a personal power statement you must first have a powerful and positive mindset. Mr. Burchard is correct that faith will be the only thing that overcomes the doubts we have. A strong mind is important to have in every part of life. We are unable to achieve our greatest dreams without faith in our abilities and a strong mindset.
Overcoming delay starts with our daily planning and follow-through. Here is my most challenging monster, delay. I know I have shared this before, but I struggle to follow-through with my plans or goals. I have found that better planning creates a productive environment. The more we lay out a plan and create action steps, the more we will achieve. Most recently, I have found that some of my biggest tasks are left for another day, but that day keeps getting further away and true procrastination starts to rule my life. The need to assign time to tasks is a valuable technique to stop your procrastination. Act right away and create the momentum necessary for your success.
Avoiding division starts by seeing the value in others and showing them gratitude. Some people can get on our nerves, I get it. Those people still have value and serve their organizations at high levels. We must care for each other and see the many gifts each one of us has. Love is the most powerful tool humans have in their arsenal. When we see value and start appreciating others, division dissipates.
What name do you give your inner monsters and why?
What causes doubt in your abilities or makes you question your dreams?
Where are you procrastinating in your life or in achieving your goals?
What or who creates division in your life and how do you plan to overcome it?
Last week we discussed how we could stop feeding the monsters that get in our way. This week we extended that conversation to further describe those monsters, using Brendon Burchard’s book. This is a must have book for every leader. I hope you get the opportunity to define those monsters that hold you back, and remember, we can’t change what we don’t identify. Have an awesome week, and please leave a comment that will contribute to this conversation and make it even better.
