What are we doing to check-in with one another at all levels of our organization?
We all had a very different school year so far. Some of us are holding school in person and others are doing it online. Maybe some are even holding school in a hybrid format, but we are all struggling a bit. As I reflect thus far, I cannot help but wonder how we are managing all this change, frustration, or uncertainty? The conversation among many school leaders and many professional articles revolves around the social-emotional impacts we are seeing in our students, teachers, and leaders. Many leaders have written plans and adopted policies to aid in the running of our organizations. We all are working so hard to ensure that the people in the organizations are safe and receiving what they need. We are scrutinized along with our plans and policies for consistency and effectiveness. We do our best to offer support to the overworked, stressed-out teachers who are struggling to keep their student’s best interests at heart. We must check-in with our people!
What I have learned recently is you cannot neglect to do the warm-fuzzy things. Everyone appreciates being acknowledged, and it is important for leaders to do this. My approach has usually been one-on-one or in small groups. Showing appreciation can be done verbally as well as tokens or gifts to show appreciation. Simple act or warm-fuzzy moments can go a long way for your people. These acts help the whole organization.
Communication is always and issue in many organizations. No matter how much we try to keep lines of communication open, there is always ways to improve. At times we get caught up in our day and we forget the simple act of walking around and visiting. I, for one hate to interrupt my teachers, but I have tried to get out and visit with them more. Like warm-fuzzy moments, simple interactions can go a long way too.
Plan some fun activities or warm-fuzzies for your people.
Schedule walks throughout your organization to visit your people.
This week I hope you take a moment to check-in with your people. I hope you can make a connection with these individuals on your team. Please leave a comment below and add to this week’s conversation.
