Are you on the right path to building your organizational goals?
With every new and existing process, we develop there is right direction to start. Sometimes we might not start out smoothly. Robyn Jackson shares the Builder Blueprint concept throughout the book, Stop Leading Start Building. Every time this form is used the Mission, Vision, and Core Values are always at the top of the form bringing the focus to these important points. This procedure shared by Jackson gives me the idea to re-establish my focus on our new vision and mission statement. We are currently looking at our MTSS (Multiple Tiers Systems of Support) process and develop it into a true RTI (Response To Interventions) program. After reading Jackson’s book, I think it is important to relate this to our new Mission and Vision statement.
Jackson talked about the time administrators spend looking at data and added the idea of instinct to the mix. We can spend too much time looking at surveys and test scores. The idea that we should use our instincts along with these data points seems so important. She also talked of using observational data after conducting evaluations. For me, this was an important learning point that I gained from this book. It would be extremely helpful for my current situation, to see what common issues are occurring in all classrooms. The Builder’s Blueprint is something I may go out and find on the website provided by Mrs. Jackson to assist me in improving things for my school. The hope is it will provide me a road map to successfully implementing our MTSS procedures.
Another highlight for me was the 90-day plan as discussed in this book. As I stated last week, I think I did not sell the new vision and mission statement. So, if I failed to sell it to the staff, they will not comprehend my goal for the district. The 90-day planning procedure will offer a better direction for our endeavors. Robyn R. Jackson shared the six stages of a transformational cycle that I feel help meet the needs the organization plan. Theses stages: Excite, Explore, Engage, Expect, Evaluate, Extend, will guide my procedures for improving things in my district. The Buildership idea of identifying our purpose and build the people are truly what I want to accomplish this year. Together we need to set our roadmap, make the plan and follow it. Each plan we work could be finished in the 90-day time frame, but others may not. Either way this book has got me thinking how I can use it to improve things in my district.
Have you relayed your plans and goals effectively?
Are you bringing the focus to each initiative through the lens of you Mission and Vision?
How do you know you are on the right path and your people understand the direction?
I cannot say enough about the book, Stop Leading Start Building: Turn Your School into a Success Story with the People and Resources You Already Have. This book has opened my eyes and given me a better thought process on the method of change schools should be trying. If you are a school leader, please get this book.
